Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt Steelhammer III, 73, passed away on June 1, 2026, at his lakeside family home in Mathis, Texas. He was born on March 15, 1953, in San Antonio, Texas, to Theodore Roosevelt Steelhammer Jr. and Lucille Steelhammer, and was raised in Mathis.
Ted began developing his auto‑mechanic skills as a young man while helping at the family garage. After graduating from Mathis High School, he attended Del Mar College, where he earned his welding degree, and later Bee County College, where he obtained his auto mechanics certificate. He became a professional welder by trade and eventually retired from the construction equipment industry.
Ted was a hardworking, dedicated family man who loved get‑togethers, hunting, fishing, and building custom barbecue pits. He enjoyed spoiling his precious dog Daisy, collecting model trains, all things Star Trek, dancing, and singing karaoke.
His true zest for life came from riding his motorcycle on the open road during his many “bike runs” throughout his lifetime — even taking his granddaughter on one at the age of eight. He cherished the rumble of his Harley‑Davidson and the friendships made along the way.
On Friday nights, you could find him at Vick’s, dancing with his wife Debbie to all kinds of music, surrounded by friends. If you were lucky, you might catch them dancing the polka.
Ted’s happiest moments were spent enjoying homemade barbecue while surrounded by his grandchildren. He loved his family deeply and was proud and hopeful for the generations to come.
He is preceded in death by his father, Theodore Steelhammer Jr.; his mother, Lucille Steelhammer; his grandfather, Theodore Steelhammer; and his grandmother, Jewel Steelhammer.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah “Debbie” Steelhammer; his brother, Clarence Ray Steelhammer; his sons, Ryan James Steelhammer (Nelda Jean) and Keith August Steelhammer (Nicole Peters); his grandchildren, Sidney James Steelhammer, Tyler Bunch, Rhianna Star Steelhammer, Alana Perez, Evan Hayes Steelhammer, and Simon Aksel Steelhammer; and his great‑grandchildren, Landon Steelhammer and Savannah Bunch.
Although we will miss him greatly, we will always cherish the memories we shared.
Pallbearers: Chris Rifkind, Chris Weir, John Dworaczyk, Scott Crisman, Ruben Cardona, Alton Griggs
