Shirley Ann Mount

Shirley Ann Barrows Mount went home to be with our Lord on June 12, 2025, at the age of 87 years. She was born in Rocksprings, Texas, on October 31, 1937, to Ruth Grace (Curren) and Robert Lee Barrows, Jr. and was the oldest of five children.

Shirley married the love of her life, Karl Mount, on November 1, 1958. They were blessed with two daughters, Karla Ann and Patricia Kay. They celebrated 61 years of marriage before Karl passed away on July 21, 2020.

Shirley was born 2 months premature and weighed around 3 pounds. She was so tiny she spent the first six weeks of her life sleeping in a shoebox which served as her first crib. Starting out as a premature baby at around three pounds she became a fighter in life which instilled a strong belief in her faith, family and friends.

Shirley’s faith and family were the primary focuses of her life. She was a faithful member of the Portland Church of Christ and lived her faith on a daily basis. An accomplished cook, she loved to prepare meals and special desserts for her family and friends and you considered yourself fortunate to partake of her homemade enchiladas or German Chocolate Cake.

Shirley was a member of the Taft Women’s Club which provided her with many opportunities to fundraise for the Taft Public Library. Her love of books and reading to her girls culminated in trips to the library along with special outings to McGinnis Bookstore in Corpus as an extra treat. A special memory was one fundraiser of selling t-shirts for the public library which had the phrase the Happy Bookers Club emblazoned across the shirt.

One of the biggest blessings in her life happened in 2001 with the birth of her granddaughter Emily Annette. They shared many outings shopping and hunting with Papa Karl. In later years their relationship became one of many outings to her favorite fast food places to go for a “car picnic” at the Dunes Park.

Preceding Shirley in death are her husband Karl, her brothers Bob Barrows and Dorman Barrows, and her sister, Martha Rose Barrows. Shirley is survived by her daughters Karla Mount Beauchamp and husband Will, Patricia Mount Caraway and husband John; granddaughter Emily Beauchamp; her sister Mary Barrows Koonce, nieces Deanne Abrameit, Dixie Mount, Melissa Gates, Sharla Hudson, Kristi Heggtveit; nephews Michael Koonce, Mark Koonce, Clay Mount, and Jason Barrows; along with numerous, great nieces and great nephews.

The family would like to thank The Pavillion Assisted Living in Portland, TX for the care and love provided to our Mother. We are so grateful for Katelyn, Misty, Rebecca, Hailey, Arlene, and Stephanie. The ladies provided the greatest love and care to our Mother. They are true beacons of light.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Taft Public Library, P.O. Box 404, Taft, TX 78390; Sunny Glen Children’s Home, P. O. Box 1373, San Benito, TX 78586 or the charity of your choice.
