In Loving Memory of Sandra Gay Sterns
August 28, 1941 – March 18, 2026
Sandra Gay Sterns, 84, of Portland, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, after a long and courageous 12-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Sandra was born on August 28, 1941, to George Washington Bartlett and Bessie Joe Bartlett. She grew up alongside her siblings, Bettye, Billy, and Jo Beth, forming lifelong bonds rooted in love and family.
She graduated from Aransas Pass High School and soon after married the love of her life, Robert Eugene Sterns III, on March 12, 1960. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with devotion, laughter, and unwavering partnership. As an Air Force wife, Sandra followed Robert to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they welcomed their two daughters, Robin and Jenny.
Sandra lived a vibrant and social life. She loved playing bridge and bunco, was an active member of a dance club, and was involved with North Shore Country Club, where she made countless cherished friendships. She and Robert were also gracious hosts of the Nike Golf Tournaments, opening their home to players over the years and creating lasting memories for all who visited.
More than anything, Sandra loved her family. She was affectionately known as “Honey ” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—a name that perfectly reflected the warmth, sweetness, and joy she brought into their lives.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings; and her beloved husband, Robert Eugene Sterns III.
She is survived by her daughters, Robin and Jenny; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life; and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Harbor Hospice, especially her nurse Liza, and to ComfortCare, especially her devoted caregiver Yvonne, for the compassionate care and support they provided over the years.
A memorial service will be held at Winstead’s Funeral Home, 500 Wildcat Dr, Portland, Texas 78374 on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 2:00 PM. A short service will be followed by food and a gathering for friends and family at the home of Jennifer James, 302 Hogan Dr, Portland, Texas 78374.
Sandra will be remembered for her kindness, her strength, her joyful spirit, and the deep love she had for her family and friends. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
