Russell Duncan Boates, Jr., 86, a long time resident of the Coastal Bend area, died on July 26, 2011. Mr. Boates was born in Beaver County, Oklahoma, and he served his Country with honor as the tail gunner on a B-17 bomber during World War II, including spending over 2 months as a prisoner of war in Moosburg, Germany, prior to the liberation of that prison camp by US forces under the direction of General George Patton. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bettie Jean Boates, his four children Russell Boates III of Houston, Sandra Clarkson of Portland, Tim Boates of Gurley, AL, and Scott Boates of Houston, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The family will celebrate the life of Mr. Boates in a private memorial ceremony, and they have asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Veterans organizations in the Coastal Bend.
