Rosemary C. Bazan

Rosemary C. Bazan (71) passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of April 4, 2025 after a tough fight with a short illness. She was born in Sinton, Texas on November 30, 1953 to Guadalupe and Margarita Bazan.

Reared in Gregory, Texas by a family of faith, Rosa Maria was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church Parish. She spent her youth attending Catholic school there and stayed involved with various activities-- including teaching elementary and middle school religion classes as well as singing in the choir. Later, she attended Gregory-Portland High School, where she won Best Actress her senior year. She was an active member of several clubs, and graduated in 1972. She continued her education, and graduated from Corpus Christi State University in 1982.

Rosemary was a woman of many talents and interests. She was best remembered as an English, Spanish, and ESL teacher at West Oso High School. She retired after 35 years of dedicated service to countless students, including multiple generations and branches of various families in the community.

Still wanting to educate, she went on to become an adjunct professor of English/ESL at Del Mar College, working there for several years. There, she taught students from all over the world-- a new experience that she found revitalizing and rewarding.

Finally, Rosemary's retirement years were spent enjoying quality time with her daughter and brother, fondly reminiscing about her late husband and father, as well as catching up with those she held dear.

To those who knew her best, Rosa was a wonderful singer, dancer, and actress with a charming flair for the dramatic. She could be counted on to deliver a moving performance.

In her free time, Rosemary enjoyed singing along with her morning playlists, reading romance novels with a good cup of coffee, watching classic movies, and spending time with family and friends-- especially while driving and visiting "old stomping grounds".

She was a cherished member of her family and will be dearly missed. She is preceded in death by her husband, Mike Velasquez, and her parents. Those left to mourn her passing are her daughter, Andrea Rose Velasquez, and her brother, Alfonso Bazan. Also surviving her are her maternal aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins along with her paternal cousins, from the Lopez, Menchaca, and Ayala families.

Rosemary's daughter and brother would like to extend their sincerest gratitude for the compassion and care that was shown to her by the therapy, nursing, and food staff at Christus Surgical Hospital and Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital, the hospitalists, nurses, technicians, and clergy at Christus Spohn Hospital-South, and the entire LTACH team at Post Acute Medical Hospital-Water St. Your help in the most trying times will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Winsteads' Funeral Home in Portland, with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2025 at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Ingleside.
