Roger Glenn Freitag

Roger Glenn Freitag, the cowboy, pool shark, and self-proclaimed (though unofficial) mayor of Swinney Switch, Texas, passed away peacefully in his home on December 12, 2025.

Roger was born on September 30, 1953, the third and last son to Elrano (Jack) and June Housley Freitag in Beeville, Texas. From these loving and caring parents, he inherited a love of cattle, family, the family ranch, and poker. If you happen to know which was from whom…you are amongst the lucky. If you know you know.

Roger attended and graduated from Mathis High School where he met his first wife Marsha Wetherbee. They had three sons. He later married Mary Hermes and together they had two children. He worked 30+ years at Lykes Brothers Feed Yard in Edroy and also worked on and off in the oilfield.

Amongst the things he enjoyed most (beyond what has already been mentioned) was being a grumpy (but fun) SOB, ready for a good spar with a ready opponent. And going to Vegas with his brothers and parents, feeding his cows, and the occasional fish fry.

If you knew Roger, you knew you should always be ready for a witty, spirited, and possibly cranky exchange. He enjoyed trying to make people squirm. He may have been difficult (sometimes) but behind that was a softness that he would not admit to, and love and kindness…you just had to know how to look. And thankfully, most people knew.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and June Freitag. Left to mourn his passing are his beloved brothers, Ronnie Freitag (Heidi) and Rick Freitag (Sherry). His five children Michael Freitag (Michelle), Ryan Freitag (Camille), Chris Freitag (Patsy), Stacey Freitag, and Troy Freitag. He also leaves behind his favorite niece, Joy Hendrix (Dennis) who didn’t have to, but always loving took care of him, for you we will always be grateful. In addition, he leaves behind 13 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was blessed.

Roger was adamant that he did not want a formal funeral. He is probably already mad that there was an obituary posted. (Lord please calm him down and apologize to those he has already grumbled to about this). In lieu of flowers please donate to Shriners Children’s Hospital or St. Jude’s Children’s hospital. Ride high cowboy. You will be missed.

For those who wish to express their condolences, you are welcome to share your heartfelt condolences with the family below by adding an entry on the online guest book. Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of the professionals at Winsteads' Funeral Home Mathis. 361-547- 3224 www.winsteadsfuneralhome.com
