Mary S. Garcia

It’s with a deep sadness that our Mathis Community lost a beloved member - Maria “Mary” Soto Garcia. Mary fiercely battled ALS for 3 years and finally succumbed to the illness and passed away peacefully with her beloved son, Carlos and her caretaker/ daughter-in-law, Angie by her side.

Mary was a pillar in our community and was cherished by many friends and clients; she was born in Encinial, Texas to Juan & Julieta Soto on February 13, 1946.
She received her GED at the age of 17 and enrolled in Stevenson Beauty College in 1967; she completed her courses and received her Beautician license in 1968; her family moved from Encinal to the Canales farm in Orange Grove, Texas in 1970; where she began her beauty career at Leona’s Salon. Mary continued on to work at Hope’s Beauty Salon in Mathis, where she made lifelong friends and eventually met the love of her life Avel G. Garcia. Mary went on to open her own beauty shop with help and encouragement of Abel; Mary and Abel were married July 18, 1978 and that November they welcomed their son, Carlos Daniel Garcia. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Mathis and loved her church family just like her customers; Mary’s life was her beauty shop; she well known for her infamous Red lipstick and dazzling smile.
She is preceded in death by her father - Juan Soto, Jr. and Husband - Avel “Abel” Garcia. She is survived by her mother - Julieta Soto, her two sons - Carlos Daniel (Angie) Garcia and Joel (Julie) Soto, two grandchildren - Ramon Jesus Garcia and Isabel Nicole Jimenez, numerous siblings, nieces, nephews and friends.
