Marvin Floyd West

Marvin Floyd West, 93, of Portland, TX, left this earth on May 24, 2023 to begin his eternal life with Jesus, his Lord and Savior.

Marvin was born a twin on August 22, 1929, in the small town of Dexter, New Mexico. He attended and graduated from school there, where he loved playing basketball and roping calves. Marvin married the girl next door on March 27, 1954 and spent 69 years building a family that grew to 38.

Marvin was a hardworking man, who provided well for his family and left many of life’s wisdoms on their hearts. He started his own business in 1972 and was able to farm and ranch in his later years as a hobby he’s always dreamed of having.

Marvin knew Jesus, and was a deacon at First Baptist Church Portland, TX. He loved the men in his Sunday School class and enjoyed the comradery he found there until his last class May 14, 2023.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Opal West, twin brother Melvin West, and best friend and cousin Jack Shaw.

Marvin is survived by his wife Wanda, his children Pam (Marvin) Kirk, JB (Tammy) West, and Greg (Holli) West; grandchildren Nick (Stephanie) West, Andy (Jen) Kirk, Natalie (JD) DeBellas, Jessie West, Ashley (Trent) Pyatte, Whitney (Tanner) Swinford, Mackenzie (Morgan) Knight; great-grandchildren Dominic, Dallin, Keila, Dani, Trace, Hayes, Knox, Rhett, Slade and Tilden. (And there is another one on the way.) He also is survived by Jack’s children Dick, Gary and Marijo Shaw. He was well loved and will be remembered and missed by all.

Marvin’s family would like to thank Elvia Gonzales, who was a wonderful care giver and friend over the past 3 years. We also want to thank the amazing team at Altus Hospice. Special thanks to Abel Almendares (and wife Melinda), Monica, and two special CNA’s Candy and Bella.

Pallbearers are his grandsons, Nick West, Andy Kirk, Trent Pyatte, Tanner Swinford, Morgan Knight, Dominic West, and Dallin DeBellas.
