Maria Galan

A longtime resident of Portland Texas, Maria Belinda, age 64, passed away Sunday 9/6/2020 at Northshore Emergency Center. Maria Belinda was born 10/11/55 in Taft, Texas. Her parents were Leandro H. Flores Jr. and Sarita Castillo Flores. She was a life-long resident of Portland Texas. Joaquin and Belinda were married in Portland Texas at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on May 2, 1981. They were happily married for 38 years. Maria Belinda attended Gregory Portland High School and graduated in 1974.  She attended Texas A&M University and graduated with a BA in Arts & Humanities in 1996. She worked at Social Security Administration from June 18th 2000-June 12, 2020. On June 24th 2018, she received her promotion to Lead Customer Service Representative –only one in area 4. She was highly respected and loved by all her coworkers, always going out of her way to help and assist them all. She will be greatly missed by all her friends at Social Security Administration. She was the type of person who worked to achieve success at her work and never accepted disappointments. She would like to thank all her coworkers that helped her along the way to get to the position she attained. A special thank you to Manuel Garcia for all the trust and encouragement along the way. A farewell hug and kiss to all my good friends at work; too many to mention, you know who you are. I will miss you all very much. Hope to see you again, don’t make it too soon, take your time, I’ll be here. Love y’all.

Her hobbies were photography and gardening. She loved traveling to visit family and friends. She loved her animals—cats and dogs. She loved silly and romantic movies and her daily crossword puzzles. She loved seeing elderly couples holding hands and cherishing each other—that made her cry tears of joy; that is how she wanted to be in her later years of life with her loving husband. Belinda valued the simple things in life because she was a very modest person.

She is survived by loving husband/Joaquin Galan and daughters Maria Olivia Galan/Andrew Benavides, Amanda Kristal Galan-Davila/Gabriel Davila, Christina Marie Galan. Grandchildren/Evelyn Marie Garza, Gabriella Susanna Davila, Vivienne Marie Davila. Younger sister Linda Flores-McAdoo/husband Tim McAdoo, Ethan McAdoo/wife Ashley, child Lincoln and Evan McAdoo, Niece – Melissa Ann Dixon/husband Larry Dixon, children Isaac and Mathew Dixon. Nephew- Bobby Juarez/wife Rosemary Juarez, children Roselyn, Rosejanel, little Robert. All of her dear family members in Eagle Pass, Texas: Margarita Moctezuma’s children /Lucero, Sandra, Maria Olivia, Jacaranda, Cande, Judy, Gabriella, Tomas, Salomon, Jesse, Laco and all their children. Maria Olivia Chio and all her children. Francisco Munoz, Genoveva Herrera /daughters: Moni/ Livi and Leah; Ani/Danny; children- Joaquin, Amado, Ana Margarita.  All her close school friends and her very close and dear coworkers at Social Security, which meant the world to her.

Date of Service- Viewing at Limbaugh Funeral Home- 5th & Wildcat, Portland TX- Sunday  09/13/2020 from 4:00pm until 7:00pm.  Rosary to follow.

Religious Service and Funeral 9/14/2020 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel – 10:00am proceeded by funeral procession to Palms Memorial Gardens Cemetery – 4335 CR 3567 Portland TX.

Ay, Amá.  What a time we’ve had! Thank you for being our model of an authentic life lived, of being of service to others, for your unconditional love, for the many laughs and tears shed, and for your solid faith in God.  How privileged I was during childhood not to understand the impact the mother-daughter relationship would have in my life.  If I had realized this as a child, I may have risked the authenticity of our relationship in service of perfecting it.  Our journey was genuine and human and created the environment and the framework that I would use to assess my purpose in life.  You gave me grace and room to grow into my own person while always waiting with open arms and fantastic hugs when I needed it.  As referenced in one our favorite holiday movies, It’s a Wonderful Life, Clarence the angel Second class says, ‘Strange, isn’t it? Each (wo)man’s life touches so many other lives.  When (s)he isn’t around, (s)he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t (s)he?’… and the hole is there in my heart.  Our Catholic faith and culture reaffirm to me that the hole will fill with a greater love than what our Earthly forms could realize and my heart will grow as our relationship transforms and is perfected through God’s love.  I love you, Mama.  Rest well, watch us all make you proud, and God Bless.  As always… ‘You’s da best!’

We met and fell in love; never knowing our love for each other would grow so strong. Hoping to grow old together and sit together hand in hand, watching the sunset; but not so. Knowing you, you’ll probably be sitting in heaven on a bench, looking towards a sunset, waiting for me to appear. I pray to God to grant us that wish, and join us together again.
