Lorene Plumb

Lorene Plumb, of Portland, went to her heavenly home on February 14th at the age of 78, surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Corpus Christi on May 4th, 1947, to William Logan and Pearl James, Lorene and her twin sister Irene were the youngest of nine siblings. The James family was a tight-knit and spirited group that remained devoted to one another through all of life's challenges. Lorene was especially close to her twin, Irene; her older sisters, Bonnie and Roberta; and her brother, Paul, who was a loyal and faithful companion, always willing to do whatever needed to be done to care for Mom, visiting her at the nursing home daily.

Lorene married Robert Anthony “Tony” Plumb on August 27th, 1965. They shared nearly 60 years of marriage and built a home that served as the heart of their extended family. Together they raised two children, Kim and Michael. The family cherished memories of camping at the Frio, visiting grandparents in Ranger and Goliad, and enjoying weekend trips for beach outings and water skiing. Lorene was a welcoming soul who opened her home to everyone, including many of the kids' friends who became like family. She found joy in the outdoors, tending to her yard and collecting rocks, shells, and spoons from around the world. She especially treasured memories of love and laughter made during the many trips she made with her sisters. She had a kind, gentle and loving soul but definitely got a good bit of James stubbornness.

In her professional life, Lorene worked as a bookkeeper before becoming a corrections officer in Beeville during her fifties. Known for being tough but fair, she took great pride in her work and enjoyed sharing stories of her career with her grandchildren- who loved to tell their friends about their Grandma the Prison Guard. Despite the profound loss of her son, Michael, in 2005, Mama persevered with a gentle and kind spirit. A faithful Christian, she remained devoted to her family and her beliefs throughout her life. Even in her darkest hours she never lost her faith in her Lord and Savior.

Lorene was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws; her husband, Tony; her son, Michael; her twin sister, Irene; her sisters, Roberta, Bonnie, and Anna; and her brothers, George, W.L., and Talton.

She is survived by her daughter, Kim, and husband Jeff; grandchildren Mason (Shanna), Jake (Amanda), Christian (Thalia), and Madison; and great-grandchildren Maddie, Kyla, Reecie, and James. She is also survived by her brother, Paul James; sister-in-law, Sue James; Erin Garrison and Mary Dunham; her brother-in-law Mike Plumb, and several nieces, nephews, and her dear friend, neighbor of over 25 years, and bonus daughter, Jeannine DeMoss.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Avir (formerly Coastal Palms) and Opus Hospice for their wonderful care. Specifically, we would like to recognize Brooklyn, Archie, Paige, Sheila, and Trudy for their kind and compassionate care of Mama during her last days. You are angels on earth and will always hold a special place in our hearts.
