Obituary

Jose Modesto Moreno, a man whose laughter and warmth brightened every room he entered, passed away on March 22, 2026, in Kenedy, Texas. Born on February 24, 1938, in Mission, Texas, Jose’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with joy, love, and the simple pleasures that defined his remarkable spirit.

Known as a big jokester and always being a clown, Jose consistently brought smiles and laughter to those fortunate enough to know him. His playful nature was matched only by his deep passion for music. Whether singing heartily, strumming his guitar, or crafting handmade slingshots from sturdy tree branches, he found delight in sharing his talents and joy with family and friends. He also loved to fish and barbecue, often gathering loved ones to enjoy good food and great company. Jose’s culinary skills were legendary, particularly his talent for making beans and menudo, along with his delightful fish and shrimp soups that warmed many hearts and homes.

Jose is reunited with his beloved wife of 54 years, Maria Rebecca Moreno; son, George Luis Moreno; parents, Espirio and Luisa Moreno; two great-grandchildren; and numerous siblings. He leaves his legacy to his children, Adelaida (Roberto “Bobby”) Sanchez, Irene Moreno, Rita Moreno, Maria Rebecca (Juan Manuel) Sobrevilla, Jose Luis Moreno, Juan Pablo (Angelica) Moreno, Jose Modesto Moreno Jr., and Lupe Moreno. He was a devoted father and a proud grandfather to 24 grandchildren and an adoring great-grandfather to 39 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. Their love stands as a testament to the enduring mark he left behind.

Visitation will be held from 3 PM until 9 PM on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Winsteads' Funeral Home, where a Prayer Service will be held that same evening at 6 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 AM on Monday, March 30, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Descanso Eterno Cemetery II.

Jose Modesto Moreno lived with a heart that loved deeply and laughed freely. He taught all who knew him the value of joy, music, and family, leaving behind a legacy as rich and satisfying as the meals he so lovingly prepared. His spirit will forever echo in the music he treasured and the lives he touched with his kindness and humor. Though he has departed, the warmth of his memory remains, an everlasting blessing to his family, his friends, and all who had the honor of calling him a friend.
