Jimmy Dewayne Frey, 61, of Kingsville passed away on 02/09/2023. He was born in 1962 in Amarillo, Texas, to parents Bill and Betty Frey.
Chief Yeoman (ret) Surface Warfare Jimmy D. Frey is a graduate of Stapleton High School. He began active duty service to the United States Navy on March 9, 1981. After completing basic training at Recruit Training Center, San Diego, California he was ordered to Naval Training Center for Airman Apprenticeship School.
Chief Frey's duty assignments have detailed him to various ships and shore commands throughout his career. YN3 Frey received orders to Naval Air Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the only United States base located on communist soil. He returned stateside to Fighter Squadron 84, an F-14 squadron, located in Virginia Beach, VA. He returned overseas to Personnel Support Activity Detachment in Naples, Italy. Following four years in Italy, YN2 Frey completed his initial enlistment contract and was honorably discharged from the Navy. After an eleven month break from the military, YN2 Frey reenlisted and was sent to Recruit Training Command, Florida for orientation. YN2 was then sent to his first ship homeported Norfolk, VA, The USS MCCANDLESS (FF 1084) a fast frigate in support of Desert Storm. After Desert Storm, YN1 Frey was transferred back to shore duty at Fleet Surveillance Support Command, Chesapeake, VA, and then to Personnel Support Activity Detachment, Kingsville, TX, where YNC met his wife, Sally. After two years in Texas, he was sent back to sea duty to Strike Fighter Squadron 82, an F/A-18 Hornet squadron, homeported in Jacksonville, FL., deployed onboard USS George Washington , and then to another Hornet squadron, Strike Fighter Squadron 81, homeported in Virginia Beach, VA deployed onboard the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER . He was then sent to his last duty station Fleet Support Activity , Ingleside, TX, where he spent his remaining four years in the military. Chief Frey's Naval career spans over 22 years completing three deployments, sailing the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, Caribbean Sea and visiting over 35 different countries around the globe.
Jimmy was known as "Jimbo" to his close friends and family. His greatest love was spending time with his family. He loved participating in anything that involved his grandchildren, his pride and joy. He was honorable, loyal and dedicated to the people that he loved. He liked to sit outside and hangout with friends and family. His laugh could fill a room, and he loved playing jokes on people. His legacy has been left in anyone that had the honor of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his wife Araseli G. Frey, son Michael Frey, father William Wayne Frey, and sister Cheryl Porter.
Jimmy is lovingly survived by his daughters Christina Michelle De Vries and husband David of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Christina Castaneda of Corpus Christi, Lauren M. Vera and husband Orlando Vera Jr. of Concepcion; grandchildren Dylan and Vanessa De Vries, Orlando, Olivia and Owen Vera, his mother, Betty Jo Frey of Amarillo; two sisters, Sissy Ford and her husband Bill of Pfluggerville, and Tonya Hedtke and husband Chris of Amarillo; two brothers, John Frey and wife Stephenie of Amarillo, Billy Frey and wife Melissa of Georgetown; cousin Patrick Neal of New Braunfels; and many nieces and nephews, additional family members and friends; and not to forget his faithful canine companions, Cupcake and Sassy.
