Janie Armas, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend of Mathis, Texas, was a woman whose kindness touched all who knew her. She passed away peacefully in Corpus Christi, Texas, on March 23, 2026. Born on August 30, 1943, Janie lived a life filled with warmth, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to family and community.
From the young age of 18, Janie embraced her calling as a hairdresser, beginning her career working alongside her sisters. With ambition and heart, she eventually opened her own shop in Swinney Switch, Texas, where she built lasting relationships with her clients and nurtured a sense of trust and friendship. Her welcoming spirit was evident to everyone: she never met a stranger and was always ready to lend a helping hand. This genuine nature extended beyond her profession into every aspect of her life.
Janie had a profound passion for her family. Her love knew no bounds as she supported her family without hesitation or questions, simply ready to help whenever needed. Beyond her devotion to family, Janie’s spirit extended into her community. She was a faithful parishioner and proud Guadalupana at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where her faith and dedication shone brightly. As a coordinator for the Relay for Life promoting Breast Cancer Awareness, she championed causes that made a real difference in the lives of many. Her volunteerism was yet another testament to her readiness to serve others selflessly.
Janie’s zest for life led her to enjoy the adventure of traveling, with her favorite trip being to Europe, especially seeing first hand the enchanting city of Paris, France. A gifted cook, her kitchen was often filled with the aromas of Cuban dishes she lovingly prepared, bringing comfort and delight to family and friends alike.
Throughout her journey, Janie remained a pillar of strength and compassion, embodying a spirit of openness, generosity, and love. Her lasting imprint on those she encountered is one of kindness and profound humanity.
Janie is reunited with two husbands, Ramon Cavazos and Raul Armas, as well as her parents, Manuel and Esperanza Castro. She leaves her legacy to her children, Sandra (Efrain) Olivarez, Michelle (Victor) Sanchez, Esperanza (Felix) Alonzo, Raymond (Elizabeth) Cavasos Jr., and Rodolfo Cavasos; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Dolores Mendez and Esmeralda Rosas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
Visitation will be held from 3 PM until 9 PM on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Winsteads’ Funeral Home, where a Holy Rosary will be recited that same evening at 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Jose Salazar and Father Raju Thottankara and will begin at 11 AM on Friday, March 27, 2026, at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church in Corpus Christi, Texas. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Cenizo Hill Cemetery.
Janie Armas leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and community that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of her family and friends.
