James Robert Churchill met his Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 20, 2023, at the young age of 74, after a very short battle with cancer. He was born on the 19th of February, 1949. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruby Porter Churchill, who he'd been married to for over 51 years. December 10th would have marked their 52nd year of marriage. He is also survived by his only child, Lesli Churchill Cannon, her husband Lee A. Cannon , six grandchildren, James Wyatt Philip Witt, Madolyn Grace Witt, Porter Brian Witt, Patience Cannon Wiggins, (Trey) Austin Lee Cannon, Savanah Renee Cannon, and one great-granddaughter, Kenzie Lynne Wiggins. He is also survived by one sister, Wanda Churchill Luedecke, of Flower Mound, and a plethora of sister and brother in laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, family, and incredible friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milas and Angealla Churchill, a sister, Margie Woodard, and two brothers, Wesley Warneke, and Bill Churchill. Jim is, and will always be known for being one of a kind. He was a lifeguard growing up, son of a contractor, and a graduate from Uvalde Junior College, before he began his 40 year and 40 day career with the Missouri Pacific Railroad, later merging on to become Union Pacific Railroad.
To all he knew, he taught fairness, strength, knowledge, compassion, and most importantly, Faith. He welcomed anyone into his home, had a seat for anyone at his table, prayed before each meal, he believed we were all alike on the inside, and he transferred that understanding to anyone he could. He was known for his long lectures, ability to care when it seemed impossible, and could build absolutely anything. He was a survivor of his own world; he built a great one, and it will never falter. Daddy typically led by example;
Some people don't truly LIVE their lives, and although his was not nearly long enough, he LIVED his.
It is so hard to imagine a life without him…he was an acrobat jumping off of the diving board, he played with us all like another little kid, and as time went on, he became a little less active, though still strong as an ox. He taught anyone and everyone to get back up from anything and everything. Fathoming him not being at particular future events, or even sitting in his barn, tightens our chests, as does hearing that blaring train horn. As his only child and daughter, I thought he'd live forever. In some ways, maybe I was right. That man will forever be in my heart, no matter the places I go, or what I'm doing. I cannot speak for myself, alone, on this matter, as he will live on in the hearts of so many others. His beautiful bride, Ruby, as he had begun to call her as he aged, is left with memories that none of us can even begin to fathom. She lost her best friend, her soul mate, and the one true love of her life…as she was his. Their's was a true love story. They took care of each other through everything, including both of their cancer survivals, and she was at his side at his final moment in this life.
While today is the epitome of the feeling of failure, it is at the same time, the feeling that without a doubt, he was welcomed home with peace and love like we only dream of.
Jim Churchill was a gift from God, and he knew without a doubt he would go back to be with Him for eternity.
Respecting his wishes, there will be no services, but phone calls and visits are certainly welcomed at this time
