Obituary

Gracie Lara passed away Saturday, August 1, 2026, in Portland, Texas.

Gracie was born on October 23, 1959, in Rockport, Texas, to Claudio and Maria Lara. She was a lifelong resident of Rockport and attended schools in the Aransas County School District. Her first job was working at HEB, where she dedicated 36 years of service before retiring. She genuinely enjoyed working for HEB. Many of her co-workers felt like family. She loved every chance to connect with customers and brighten their day. Gracie could start a warm conversation with anyone she met.

Gracie lived life with a bright, joyful spirit. She had a rare gift for making everyone around her feel special. She poured her heart into being a devoted mother, daughter, grandmother, and sister. Her family and friends were her greatest treasure and she loved them dearly. Gracie loved to dance which matched her tenacity and love of life. She would share her home, her food, and her last dollar with anyone in need. She measured wealth not by what she had, but by what she gave away.

Gracie is survived by her children, Yvonne Valenzuela (Albert Cantu) and Joshlyne Rojas (Jose); six grandchildren, Robert, Alex, Andres, Kresten, Jose, and Jaxon; mother, Maria Lopez; sister, Irene Ramos (Joe); brothers, Claudio Lara Jr. (Whitney Lombardo), Joe Lara (Terri), Larry Lara, and Jerry Lara; her devout partner of 10 years, Derek Tolbird; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Gracie was preceded in death by her father, Claudio Lara; step-mother, Mae Jane Lara; sister, Gloria Lara; step-brother, Brian Flanigan; and nephew, Christopher Sanchez.

Gracie will be remembered for her loving heart, generous spirit, beautiful smile, and the joy she brought to the lives of her family and friends. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be cherished forever.

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Family will be receiving friends at 12:30 PM on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Winsteads' Funeral Home, where a Memorial Celebration will follow at 1 PM. Services will conclude at 2 PM at the Winsteads' Funeral Home Chapel.
