Erasmo “Nune” Gonzales Huerta, whose vibrant humor and deep devotion shaped the lives of so many, passed away on July 28, 2026, at the age of 60. He was born on a winter’s day, January 8, 1966, and from the start, his spirit brought warmth and laughter to all who knew him.

Nune’s legacy is woven tightly with that of his beloved family. He is survived by his children, Erasmo G. Huerta III and his wife Lauren Blackledge Huerta, Ezequiel B. Huerta and his wife Mackenzie Huerta, and Celeste E. Huerta Lopez and her husband Nathan Lopez. His heart swelled with pride and love for his grandchildren, Adelina R. Lopez and Mateo R. Lopez, who brought him immeasurable happiness. Nune’s guidance and affection extended to his sisters, San Juanita Huerta Moreno and Anita H., along with his brothers-in-law, Adan E. Moreno Jr. and Joe Leija. He also leaves behind a cherished group of nephews and nieces, each touched by his kindness and quick wit.

Awaiting him in rest is his dear mother, Oralia G. Huerta, his father, Erasmo V. Huerta Sr. and his brother-in-law, Joe Leija.

A proud graduate of Mathis High School, Class of 1984, Nune continued his education at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, earning his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. His lifelong dedication was clear as he poured his energy, passion, and wisdom into teaching and coaching until his retirement in 2021. Coaching was never just a career for Nune—it was a calling, a profound act of service that allowed him to touch countless lives both on and off the court. He taught in Mathis for ten years, guided students in Skidmore for eleven years, and lent his expertise in San Diego and Three Rivers as well.

Those who knew Nune can hear his voice reminding them, with that trademark dry humor and twinkle in his eye: “If you were on time, you were late.” It was just one of the countless lessons he shared, often punctuated by a winning smile or a goofy joke, expressions of the joy and affection that defined him. He gave the best advice, sometimes disguised in a clever turn of phrase, and always stood ready with kindness and support for anyone who needed it.

Beyond his professional life, Nune lived richly in small joys and steadfast passions. He was known for his love of the San Antonio Spurs, for his extensive Hot Wheels collection, and for his affinity for sports trading cards—a collector in the truest sense, finding meaning and memory in every object. Gentle and generous, he nurtured not only his family but also the animals that found their way to his care outside, making his home a space of warmth and belonging for all creatures.

Above all else, Erasmo “Nune” Gonzales Huerta loved his children and grandbabies fiercely, and that devotion echoed through every moment of his days. To his family, his friends, his students, and his community, he was an amazing coach, a beloved confidant, an endless source of encouragement and laughter.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 5, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Winsteads’ Funeral Home, 121 N Duval St., Mathis, TX. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM at the same location. A Mass in celebration of his life will follow on Thursday, August 6, at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 217 W San Patricio Ave., Mathis, TX, with interment at Descanso Eterno Cemetery II, 1014 S. Aster Ave., Mathis, TX.
