Obituary

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Dennis “Denny” Alan Bales, on June 2, 2026.

Denny, whom many affectionately called “The Face of Corpus Christi,” was known for his passion for putting Corpus Christi, Texas, on the map—not only through his beautiful jewelry stores, but even more through his tireless efforts to rescue animals and help them find loving homes.

In addition to his heart for animals, Denny was a true patriot who loved God, loved the United States of America, and was a steadfast advocate for law enforcement. While many people knew the serious and determined side of our dad, those closest to him also knew his love of storytelling, practical jokes, laughter, and camaraderie with family, friends, and members of both the Corpus Christi and jewelry communities.

Denny was born on June 1, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, to the late Gary and Dorothy Bales. He began his jewelry career in California, at the young age of 22 with the Zale Corporation, which eventually brought him to Texas, in the 1960s. Denny went on to own and operate his own jewelry stores for more than 50 years and proudly served as a Corpus Christi jeweler for over 40 years.

Throughout his career, Denny received numerous awards and honors for his sales achievements, leadership, work ethic, and commitment to serving his community. Through his generosity and dedication, he helped raise countless donations for no-kill animal shelters, the Fallen Horse Rescue, the Corpus Christi Police Foundation, and many other worthy causes.

Our world needs more people willing to take a stand like our father did—to be a voice for those who do not have one, to be strength for those who are weak, and to give generously to those who are making our world a better place.

Denny is preceded in death by his cousins, Joan Jolliffe and Judy Glenn, as well as his lifelong friend, Lois Calvillo.

He is survived by his children, Denise (Tod) Fields, Torin (Melissa) Bales, and Todd Bales; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; as well as numerous members of extended family and beloved friends.

We cannot adequately express the overwhelming outpouring of love and tributes that have been shared in honor of our father. He was truly one of a kind—a superhero to so many. He never sought recognition or praise. His work simply enabled him to give to others.

Job well done, Dad.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the staff of Corpus Christi Spohn Hospital and Harbor Hospice of Portland for the compassionate care they provided during our father’s final days. We are equally grateful to Jake and Judith Hinojosa, and Heidi Bustillos, for giving our dad’s beloved dogs loving forever homes.

Family will be receiving friends at 9 AM on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at GracePoint Church, 4755 Wildcat Drive, Portland, Texas, where a Memorial Service to honor Denny’s life will follow at 10 AM.
