Daniel Lee Mitchell

November 4, 1936 to March 20, 2025

On the morning of March 20, Daniel Lee Mitchell passed away peacefully with his son and daughter by his side. He was 88 and had been in hospice care at his assisted- living apartment near the beaches of Corpus Christi Bay.

He was born in Earth Texas to parents LB and Myrtle Mitchell. He spent his early years in Levelland Texas and met Clara Louise Howard, the love of his life, at Levelland High School. They married and moved to Austin where he proudly graduated from the University of Texas in 1963, a year in which the UT football team won the national championship. He loved his alma mater. He also proudly earned his C.P.A. in 1969. His experience and education allowed him to serve in state government for many years as the Administrator of the Fiscal Division for the Department of Human Services until he retired. After retirement he rarely left the house without donning a UT baseball cap. He loved his son and daughter, and even though he didn’t play sports as a kid, was quick to volunteer his time to assist in coaching their baseball and softball teams while also serving on the board of the neighborhood baseball/softball league. His favorite part of retirement was playing cards. He was a vicious competitor who played thousands of hands with his family members, and it brought him great joy.

People that really knew him would describe him as an incredibly sweet, kind, and patient man that was non-judgmental. He always tried to do the right thing in every circumstance. He lived a life characterized by putting others first, especially his beloved wife.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, brother Leonard Mitchell, and sister Molly Brock. He is survived by his son Scott Mitchell and his wife Sharon Mitchell, his daughter Amy Pool and Doug Pool. Other survivors include grandchildren Alyssa Mitchell, Colton Mitchell (wife Taylor), Shelby Malacon (husband Daniel), and Tanner Keen and Dalton Keen, as well as his great grandchildren Jude Husting and Zephyr Mitchell.
