Christos Papaioannou

March 25, 1944 — May 6, 2021

Christos Papaioannou

On Thursday, May 6, 2021, Christos “Chris” Papaioannou lost a tough battle with stage four kidney cancer. Under the loving care of Hospice, he peacefully passed away at home in the arms of his wife, Mimi.

Chris leaves behind his wife Noemi “Mimi” Papaioannou; Daughter, Phyllis Papaioannou (Norbert Rodriguez); Son, John Papaioannou (Kellie); and Son, George Papaioannou.

Chris was born on March 25, 1944 in a small village in Greece named Vrynena. He is survived by four sisters, still living in Greece, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his brother, who resides in Germany with his wife and family.

Growing up Chris tended to herds of sheep that roamed the mountainside in his village, sometimes being left alone doing this work for days. This work helped Chris to build courage at an early age.

As is required of all Greek men, at age 18, Chris joined the Army where he served for two years. His service taught him hard work and discipline.

In the 1970’s Chris made his first trip to America. He found a job in New York City as a busboy during the winter months and would travel back to Greece during the summer to run a restaurant on the island of Skiathos.

While in New York, Chris made friends who offered him a job in Houston, Texas. After several years spent in Houston, Chris started working in the Gas Station Industry. In 1984 he became an Exxon dealer and with partner, Andy Fetsis, opened an Exxon in Portland, Texas which became his new home and the place he would meet his wife, Mimi.

Chris and Mimi met on a blind date and eventually went on to be married and have three beautiful children. His business, now called G-P Auto Tech Center, is still run by his family.

Chris loved to go hunting with his friend George Piperis, swim at the beach, and tend to his garden. He was never one to sit still for very long.

Chris will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a hard and dedicated worker who always put his family first. He will be missed every day.
