Billie Jean Greene

Billie Jean Watson Greene was born on January 16, 1932 in Rusk County, Texas. She was a loving daughter and the sixth of seven children born to Joseph Benson Watson and Carly Lee Stroud Watson. Billie Jean went to be with her Lord and Savior and to be reunited with her loving husband, Bill, on December 21, 2025 in Mathis, Texas. She grew up in Kilgore, Texas, attending Danville Elementary School. Kilgore High School and later Kilgore Jr. College.

She met William D “Bill” Greene on a blind date. They dated a short while until he was called up by the National Guard to serve in the Army in Japan in 1950. Billy, as he was known back then, told her he was going to marry her when he returned from his deployment. They corresponded for about two years by mail. He returned in early June and they were married at Eastview Baptist Church on June 21, 1952.

Throughout her life, Jean, as she was known by her friends, loved to read, sew, work crossword puzzles, play board games and solitaire. She was an excellent cook, which drew family and friends around the table for many celebrations. She loved being a wife, a mother and a grandmother. In her early life she worked several jobs, including sales clerk, telephone operator and soda jerk. She first went to work at Gregory-Portland ISD as a substitute teacher. She continued with G-PISD as the receptionist at the Central Office, and then Payroll Supervisor. During her time at the Central Office, she worked hard, selling football tickets both at the office and at the games. She retired from the school district after more than 30 years. While she loved Wildcat Football, her most cherished times were spent with family, whether it was going to the Aquarium, the Beach or out to eat. She always wanted to “take care” of everyone. She loved decorating for Holidays, especially Christmas, and anything that had to do with hummingbirds.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her parents, Joe and Carly, her brothers, Joseph Otis Watson, George Richard “Mutt” Watson and Richard Buck Watson, her sisters, Vera Mae Chambers, Rosa Lee “Susie” Snow and Lola Belle “Bobbie” Burton.

She is survived by her daughters, Daralyn Jeanne Wallace (Richard) and Jana Carol Mutchler (David), grandchildren, Aaron Wallace (Tami), Deryni Morgan Steubing (Jeff), Jason Mutchler (Jennifer), Martie Lugo (Artie), Melanie Alaniz (Pete), Gerrick Mutchler and Tyler Mutchler, great grandchildren Seaman Apprentice Kimberly Steubing, Kyllan Wallace, Malcolm Wallace, Alaric Steubing, Kyra Steubing, Jace Steubing, Ryan Torres, Nathan Alaniz, Jacob Moreland, Kayla Alaniz, Hunter Moreland, Henry Mutchler, and Charlie Mutchler, great-great grandchildren Colton Alaniz and Zandri Alaniz. She is also survived by beloved nieces and nephews. Additionally, ‘Ms. Greene’ she is survived by her canine buddy, Wesson, ‘Mr. Brown’, and his sister, Miley, ‘Ms. Black’.

It was her wish to have a private family service, which was held on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at Winstead’s Funeral Home in Portland and Palms Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank the many friends in the Portland, Texas area for their love and well wishes over the years.
